I have been using the gleaming orange version of the vivo Y28 and I have loved it. The vivo Y28 by the way is the slimmest phone with a 6000mAh battery. This review is better watched on these short videos I made. First is the design then the battery and display and finally the camera performance.
Design
The star like back cover has these patterns has what resembles mountain peaks. The camera module contains the new dynamic light. It functions as a notification light; it grooves to music and also serves as a photo countdown. I’ll select 5 seconds and just like that. You get your photo. The fingerprint scanner is incorporated into the power button and on the other side the SIM tray can either hold 2 Nano SIM cards or a single SIM and a storage expansion SD card.
Price in Kenya
Speaking of storage, I have the 256GB version which goes for KES 25,999 but you can also get the 128GB version for KES22,999.
At the bottom from your left we have the audio jack, microphone, USB port and speaker. By the way this phone has dual speakers and the other speaker is located just on top of the punch-hole camera. That’s not all with the sound as the Y28 can boost the audio to 300%. That’s very loud
Switching to accessories the vivo Y28 comes with a flexible phone case, USB cable, SIM Ejector tool and a big 44-watt charger. I’ll do a charging experiment soon. The screen protector comes already applied to the display.
Weighing only 200 grams, the flat frame brings the most comfortable grip in its price range. No matter which angle you are holding the phone, you will feel the smooth, sleek and shiny frame that’s as light as a feather. Its elegance meets modern simplicity, with a touch of high-end sophistication.
Battery and Display
The vivo Y28 has the biggest battery in its price range, a 6000mAh battery. With the 44-Watt charger, I got up to 52% in only 35 minutes and full battery in an hour and 19 Minutes. That was 6 minutes faster than the vivo advertised figure of 85 minutes. I can rest assured that I will get the same performance in future because of the 4-year battery health assurance from vivo.
Display
The HD plus display is bright even in direct sunlight and the eye protection mode comes in handy in dark environments. The maximum 90Hz refresh rate allows for a super smooth user experience especially when scrolling and gaming.
Speaking of gaming, what about the performance? The phone is powered by a Helio G85 Processor and runs on Funtouch OS 14. With up to 16GB RAM and that’s the original 8GB RAM plus an extended 8GB, the phone can keep more apps alive in the background. It can also switch between up to 25 apps without waiting or reloading.
Like I mentioned in a previous video, there are two ROM versions, 256 and 128GB both at this price points. By the way I recorded this short voice over on the vivo Y28.
Camera
Let’s talk about the vivo Y28 Cameras. Firstly, at the back the dual camera setup consists of a 50MP main and a 2MP Bokeh. That’s the Flash and the Dynamic Light. One of its important uses is as a photo timer. I also like how the camera module colours and design just blends in with the rest of the phone. At the front is an 8MP dot in in display lens.
The phone produces nice and colourful photos with the rear camera as you can tell from my samples. Selection of more than one filter is also possible on the Y28. For example, I can select the style and filter that I want in one photo. The Live photo creates short video snippets saved as photos on your device.
The Aura screen light offers the much-needed light in dark environments. The maximum video recording quality is 1080 at 30 frames per second. That’s for both the front and rear cameras. Here are a few sample videos I took using the Y28. In the camera settings you can select to take photos in high resolution. This will produce bigger and more detailed images by fully utilizing the 50MP sensor. Zooming into such images will show you detailed segments within the main picture.
